Vlog Series: Episode 1 Disordered Eating Behaviours vs Eating Disorders
/Welcome to episode one of the vlog series. I’m so excited to share some information with you about a whole range of topics over the coming weeks.
We’re starting today with understanding a little bit more about eating psychology and some of the different types of disordered eating behaviours that can have a big impact. While eating psychology principles have been used for many years, it has mainly supported those with diagnosed eating disorders, but what we are finding is that these same principles can help those who may be experiencing disordered eating behaviours or who feel that their relationship with food is impacting their lives in ways they don’t want.
Some of the behaviours that may indicate a less than optimum relationship with food include:
Strict rules around what or when you eat
Guilt or shame if you break a food rule
Eating fast
Feeling unable to keep particular foods in the house for fear of bingeing
No or little desire to eat
Having strict lists of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ or ‘allowed’ and ‘not allowed’ foods
Hiding food or hiding eating from others
Feeling challenged by eating food prepared by others
Feeling a need to increase control around your food and eating habits
Directly correlating a body change with your eating
These things are not inherently bad, however you may find them beginning to affect your life in ways that you wish they didn’t, and that is where working with a coach to connect the deeper issues at play and transforming your beliefs around food can be of real benefit.
How did you feel as you read the list? Sometimes tuning in to that feeling can be the first indicator that there’s some places for you to explore within your own relationship with food.
